We here in New Student Programs understand how stressful it can be to send your student to college. There is so much information to process, forms to fill out, and deadlines to keep track of, that it can be very overwhelming. Our goal is to give you a good starting point and lead you to the answers for all of your questions. New Student Registration
What to expect at New Student Registration
The goal of New Student Registration is for your student to complete a course schedule for their first semester at the University of Illinois. This is a one day program that will walk your student step by step through the registration process. The day varies slightly from college to college, but generally your student will meet with advisors, explore course options, and select classes.
At the University of Illinois, we feel it is paramount that students go through this process independently. That is why we ask parents and guests to participate in the Parent and Guest Orientation Program provided by New Student Programs and the Illini Union Parent and Family Programs Office. Parents and guests will have an opportunity to meet with the colleges and ask questions, but we ask that you allow your student to complete the registration process alone.
Because you will be separated from your student for most of the day, we recommend that you keep your phones charged, make sure your student has their NetID, Password, a pen, and Government Issued ID to get their i-card.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Will I be separated from my student all day?
Not all day. We do separate you for a portion of the day, but you start your day together and will end your day together. You and your student will check-in at the Illini Union together. Parents and guests will receive a bag and 1 meal ticket for 1 guest. Students that are registering will receive their meal ticket when they head to lunch. New Student Programs holds a program for just parents and the colleges take the students to learn more about registration. At the end of the day you can coordinate a location to meet.
- Will my student need anything to check-in to registration?
To check-in to the New Student Registration program, your student just needs to know their name. But later on in the day, they will need their UIN (University Identification Number) NetID (Illinois Email) and password. If they are getting their ICARD (UofI ID Card) they will need a government issued photo ID.

- When will my student get to see different campus resources?
In the morning we will have a resource fair from 8:15-9 am. We encourage all members of the family to attend the fair. You can get information on everything from Housing to Fraternity and Sorority Affairs. Be sure to get here just a bit early so you can visit every booth. Also, your student will receive a book called Illinois Beginnings in their check-in bag. This resource guide has contact information, office locations, and a helpful hints on how to have a successful first year at Illinois. Be sure that your student utilizes this resource guide.
- Will we be able to talk to someone about my students housing?
Yes! A representative will be the last presentation of the day for parents and family members. They will be talking about different housing resources (University Housing and Private Certified). If you have specific questions about your students housing options, we invite you to stop by the University Housing Office located at 100 Clark Hall, 1203 South Fourth Street, Champaign, IL 61820.
You and your student will also have the ability to tour select residence halls in the afternoon.
- Can we speak to someone from Financial Aid about my student’s aid package?
Yes, you are welcome to visit the Financial Aid Office located in the Student Services Arcade, 620 E. John St, Champaign, IL 61820. They will give a brief presentation in the morning, then in the afternoon you and your student can visit their office to get your questions answered.
- Can we purchase athletic tickets?
Your student can get season tickets through athletics. They will be selling tickets at SDRP (Student Dining & Residential Programs Building). This is where you and your student will be for lunch.
- Why is it called "New Student Registration" for students and "Orientation" for parents and family members?
The main objective for students is to obtain a fall course schedule with their academic college. The amount of information they get about transitioning to college is limited at this point. In August students will have Fall Orientation/Welcome Days, where they will get most of their transitional information for their first year at Illinois.
Parent and Family Orientation is the main time where U of I gets to connect with Parent and Family members and help you get as much information as possible so you can support your student.
- Are these programs mandatory?
For students, yes. We require all students to go through a registration process (unless the university has given them an exception). Parents and family members are encouraged to attend all programs because information may change in regards to our health insurance, safety protocols, and other campus foundations.
- Do parents and family members get lunch as a part of this program?
Yes! We provide 1 guest meal ticket per registering student. Additional guest lunch tickets can be purchased via credit card.
- Why can’t I be with my student while they register for classes?
This is an extremely important time for the incoming students to bond with their colleges and build their academic relationship. Students will have to meet privately with their colleges throughout their academic career, and we want to start that practice as soon as possible. Also, due to space issues, we simply cannot accommodate that many guests in our registration facilities.
- Is parking free?
Yes, we do not charge for parking for our guests on the day of registration. For updated parking information please see the Admissions web page.
General Education Courses
What exactly are "General Education" courses?
The General Education (GenEd) requirements describe the core courses all students must take in order to graduate. They are an important component of students' education at the University of Illinois. Besides specializing in a major and training for a career, students should become familiar with some of the many rapidly changing disciplines. Through these requirements, Illinois undergraduates:
- expand their historical, aesthetic, cultural, literary, scientific, and philosophical perspectives
- improve critical and analytical thinking; and
- learn skills in finding, managing, and communicating knowledge
Your student may, or may not, take a GenEd their first semester. Before coming to registration, your student should think about a few interest areas that they may want to explore, but depending on their college, they may have to wait a semester before they can start exploring GenEds.
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus is very safe, but just like any other large campus or city, it will never be entirely crime-free. We have to work together as a community to keep ourselves and others safe. The campus has a variety of programs to provide a safer place in which you can study, work and socialize. University Student Health Insurance
Without proper health insurance, injury or illness can feel like walking a tightrope without a safety net. As a parent or guardian, you worry about so much—not whether you can pay for an unexpected trip to the doctor or emergency room should not be one of them.
The Student Health Insurance office is here to ensure you have all the information needed to make the right decision about your health care coverage needs.
Here are some common misconceptions about our current student health insurance. For more information please visit si.illinois.edu.
- I can only use the Student Insurance at McKinley.
Truth: The Student Health Insurance plan is only used OUTSIDE of McKinley Health Center.
- I will be covered all year round.
Truth: As long as you are taking classes and are assessed the fee you are covered, however if you do not take classes during a semester, you may extend coverage through the next semester.
- I only have to submit the waiver one time.
Truth: The waiver must be done annually if you would like to remain in a waived status.
- I can only use the Student Insurance plan in the Champaign/Urbana area.
Truth: The plan is worldwide and can be used anywhere in the world.
- Student Insurance will not cover me over breaks (winter and spring).
Truth: The Student Health Insurance plan is designed to cover students over winter and spring breaks.
- The Student Insurance plan will cover everything 100%.
Truth: The Student Health Insurance plan is an 80/20 plan. After meeting the annual deductible, covered charges are paid at 80% with 20% being the student responsibility. Charges for routine care mandated by the Affordable Care Act are paid at 100% such as mammograms, pap smears, routine physicals and routine immunizations.
- What if I am not registered over the summer, will I still be covered?
Yes! As long as you were assessed the fee and covered in the spring you may extend your spring coverage through the summer during the summer enrollment change period. Please check si.illinois.edu for dates.
- What if I lose my parents insurance, can I get back on the plan?
Yes! As long as you are enrolled in credit seeking classes and in a manner in which you are assessed fees during the semester in which you are losing the other insurance you may reinstate into the Student Health Insurance plan. Please access si.illinois.edu for more information on reinstatements.
- What if I go down to part time status?
As long as you are enrolled in credit seeking classes and assessed all fees you will continue to be eligible for the Student Health Insurance.
- What if I have to withdraw from the University, will I still have the insurance?
Yes! If you have to withdraw from the University you will still continue to be covered until that semester is over.
Family Education Rights and Privacy Act
This is the federal law that affords students certain rights with respect to their education records. You may hear university officials say they cannot share information about your student with you. How to get involved as a parent or family member?
There are may ways for you to get involved with campus. The two largest organizations are Moms Association and Dads Association. Working with the Illini Union Parent and Family Programs Office, these organizations create scholarship opportunities, organize Moms and Dads Weekends, and much more. By having a student enrolled at UofI, you are already a member. To become active, all you have to do is go to their web pages and sign up for the emails. It is just that easy!
